About the Scheme

Participation in laboratory proficiency testing (PT) schemes is important in assessing the ability of a laboratory to provide accurate test results. Outcomes of participation also identify problems or areas for improvement in malaria diagnosis and guide corrective action as required.

EA-REQAS has designed a PT programme specifically for malaria microscopy, since visual detection and identification of parasites in peripheral blood remains the standard for clinical malaria diagnosis.

Objectives of the Programme

This Malaria Microscopy proficiency testing scheme is designed to examine 3 main aspects of the laboratory diagnostic process. These are:

  • Detection of malaria parasites in Giemsa stained blood films to determine if slides are positive or negative.

  • Differentiation of Plasmodium species in Giemsa stained blood films.

  • Determination of malaria parasite density in Giemsa stained blood films.

The validity of PT results obtained from each participating facility or site will also be determined by:

  • Calculating sensitivity and specificity of the participant’s microscopy technique.

  • Determination of positive and negative predictive values of the participant’s microscopy technique.
